Principal’s message
Term 2 is now in full swing with a range of activities already happening.
Do you have a child or know of a local child who will entering Kindergarten in 2026? We are taking enrolments now! Please see the poster underneath my 'Principal's message' in this newsletter.
PSSA Winter Sport commenced and I was fortunate enough to get out to watch the Football / Soccer teams go through their paces. I continue to be amazed by the behaviour of our students when they represent the school. You played with great skill and sportsmanship. Well done!
Last week our Stage 1 students visited the Field of Mars to complement work done in class on water environments. Although a wet and muddy day, all students enjoyed the experience.
Next week, our Stage 2 students will head to Field of Mars on Monday 26th May for their excursion.
Yesterday, members of our bands participated in a band workshop next door at St John's Anglican Church. Supported by a number of tutors and conductors, they worked hard all day, playing their hearts and practising and performing new material. Well done to all of you. Thank you to our parent helpers who attended the day. Special thanks to Imelda Crimmins and Karen Ross for organising the day and to the tutors who worked so hard. Please read the article on our Band Workshop contained in this newsletter.
Our P&C and helpers were out in force on Wednesday 7th May to sell some wonderful Mothers' Day gifts at the Mothers' Day Stall. The students excitedly came up to the hall to choose their gifts in a sensible and orderly way. My deepest thanks goes to Liz Vrontamitis and her team of helpers who worked like trojans during the morning.
The P&C continue the momentum by organising a Parent Trivia Night on Saturday 21st June. Please see the Events and Fundraising section of this newsletter for further details. It promises to be a wonderful evening! There's even the possibility of a Teacher's table for the Trivia Night and we look forward to the battle!
For further events, please check our Term 2 Parent Calendar contained in this newsletter.
On a personal note, I will be taking a period of leave from Term 2 Week 6 (Monday 2nd June) to Term 2 Week 10 (Friday 4th July) for family reasons. I will return in Term 3 commencing Monday 21st July. Mrs Erin Taggart will be our relieving Principal during this time and Miss McQueen will teach class 3/4T.

NSW Public Schools Student Survey
Dear parents and carers,
We are committed to working with you to offer support and remove any barriers that may be preventing your child from regularly attending school.
Please remember that the NSW Education Act requires that all student absences must be explained within 7 days of the first day of them being away from school. Please contact us promptly whenever your child is absent and let us know the reason for them being away. This allows us to provide the right support and make sure your child's absences are recorded correctly.
In the event your child has repeated or ongoing unexplained absences, we will continue to try to contact you about each absence to provide appropriate support for you and your family.
We know that for our students every day of school matters.
Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child's learning and wellbeing. When your child misses one day a week, that's 40 days of school and 8 weeks of learning in one year. Over an entire school journey this adds up to 2.5 years of lost learning.
If you have any questions or if you need support with your child’s attendance, please contact me on 9878 1673.
Kind regards
Rob Francis
Principal

On Monday 19th May, our band members attended an all-day Band Workshop next door at St John's Anglican Church.
I am so pleased and proud to say that all of our students played their hearts out. They were polite, respectful and supportive of each other.
My thanks goes to Imelda Crimmins for organising a wonderful experience, to Craig Ross for his hard work in conducting and to Colin Grisdale, Oliver Hughes, David Silva and Bonna Yoon for their tutorials. You all contributed to a fantastic experience for our students!
A special thanks to John Chappell for making his church available to us for the day.

Stage 1 - Field of Mars Excursion - Exploring Our World Through Geography

It was a pleasure to visit Class 1C and see all the lovely work they are doing.
Diar, Jaden, Emma, Hannah, Emelia and Walter had written their own versions of "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus". They were very entertaining!
Thank you for your wonderful work!
President’s Update
After the sizzling success of the Election BBQ, the P&C is pleased to announce that the $3000 of funds raised on that day will be going straight back into literacy resources for our school. This means new decodable readers and other literacy related texts will be purchased by the school with P&C funding to support the delivery of the new literacy curriculum. A great learning outcome for all our students!
I hope the Mums all enjoyed a special Mother's Day with their gifts that had been chosen with such care. Thanks to Jess, Liz and the amazing crew of volunteers who ran the Mother's Day stall a fortnight ago
Canteen continues to be a success on Fridays. The P&C are making life easier for our canteen crew by purchasing two hand trolleys to help with lunch order deliveries. If you'd like to be involved on a canteen roster, please email Amelia at pccanteen@nrps.org.au.
Look out for some new garden areas coming soon. Our P&C Environment Coordinator, Linda, is working with our gardener Chris and our Stage 3 students to plant out some new garden beds over the coming weeks.
After a great DoughRaiser with Dominos last Friday, there's still time to dine out in May - Grill'd Top Ryde have a North Ryde P&C fundraising jar instore this month as part of their Local Matters program. Sounds like a good excuse to buy a meal and avoid cooking - again!
IMPORTANTLY - we'd love to see you all at our upcoming Trivia night. Early bird tickets are on sale now! This night is a great way to hang out - without your kids - and get to know other NRPS parents. It should be a fun evening with past and present parents, students, and possibly even some teachers. Participation is open to all - you don't need to be good at trivia (I'm certainly not!), and you don't need to have grown up in Australia. Just come for the fun social atmosphere and be part of our school's great community!
There's still lots of ways to be involved with the P&C. Help and ideas are always welcome. Join our Facebook group "North Ryde Public School P&C" or reach out via email to pcpresident@nrps.org.au.

Doughraiser Wrap-Up
A big thank you to all the families who supported our Doughraiser by ordering a pizza on Friday night. Thanks to your generosity, Domino’s North Ryde has donated over $600 toward our school’s fundraising efforts.
It was wonderful to see our school families and the North Ryde community come together so strongly to support this event.
Mother’s Day Stall
We hope all the mums and special family members enjoyed their gifts on Mother’s Day!
A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers who helped set up a fantastic stall that ran smoothly on the day. The children put great thought into choosing their gifts, and we hope you loved them just as much as they did.
Special thanks to our amazing volunteers: Jess Musri, Alice, Aurawan, Danni Parry, Kate Gulczynski, Marice Hartono, Melissa Calvi, Nadia Sundstrom, Roya, Sue Perrone, Svetlana, and Tahlia Hagarty.
Your time, effort, and care helped make everyone’s Mother’s Day truly special — thank you!

New Garden Beds at the Main Gate!
What a fantastic afternoon of planting and mulching at the school entrance on Monday 19th May! Students from 5/6C, along with Chris the gardener and myself, got their hands dirty creating beautiful new garden beds. Their enthusiasm was contagious, with many planting their first-ever plant!
A huge shoutout to Habitat Ryde Community Nursery for donating the incredible native plants, and to the City of Ryde Council for providing the mulch. These local native plants will help boost biodiversity and create a welcoming habitat for small birds.
Chris even gave the entrance a mini spring clean, freshening up the brick wall and paths.
A little help from our community! To give these new plants the best chance to thrive, we kindly ask everyone to help by keeping off the garden beds while they establish. Your support will make a big difference in creating a flourishing space for all to enjoy.
School Grounds Planning Group
Exciting changes are on the horizon! Soon, I’ll be reaching out to the school community to form a planning group to discuss upcoming working bees and exciting new projects to enhance our outdoor spaces—gardens, playgrounds, seating areas, toilets, and more. Stay tuned for more details—we’d love for you to be involved!

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Ethics Volunteer Team
A huge thank you to our dedicated Ethics Volunteers at NRPS. Without your commitment, our Ethics program simply wouldn’t be possible!
A special shout-out to Graham Marshall, who has rejoined the team to teach Year 1, and Svetlana Podnebesnaia, who recently joined to teach Year 3. We’re grateful to have you both on board!
Spotlight on Stage 2: What Are We Talking About?
Being Greedy
What does it mean to be greedy? Is there anything wrong with wanting more money or toys than you can use? Is it okay to want to be the richest person in the world — to have more gold than anyone else?
These are some of the thought-provoking questions our Stage 2 students have been exploring in Ethics classes.
We Need More Volunteers!
We are still seeking volunteers for Kindergarten and Stage 3 classes.
More families are choosing Ethics than we currently have volunteers to teach, resulting in a waitlist of four classes.
If you can spare just half an hour on Thursday mornings, or know friends or grandparents who might be interested, please get in touch.
For more information on how you can help, contact Liz Vrontamitis on 0405 395 247 or at pcethics@nrps.org.au

Winter Tracksuit Jacket, Polar Fleece Jacket and Sloppy Joe Jumper have arrived and all sizes are ready for purchase.
The long sleeve polos are due in the next 3-4 weeks. Currently we don’t have any Size 10 or 12 in the long sleeve polo, I hope that doesn’t affect your child too much. Please email me for alternatives and ways to keep your child warm if you are desperately waiting for these sizes.
Price Rises
Unfortunately, we are having to increase our prices on a lot of items between $1-$4 dollars. This is because our supply costs have increased substantially over the last two years. This will be the only Price rise this year and will be implemented on the first day of Term 3 (21st July 2025). Below is a list of the price increases that were agreed at the P&C Meeting on Tuesday.

New pedestrian safety decals around schools
Parents!
Children learn safe road user habits from you and will continue them when they are old enough to travel alone.
Remember this simple message and share it with them whenever you are crossing a road, driveway or car park:
STOP! one step back from the kerb.
LOOK! both ways!
LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic.
THINK! is it safe to cross?
