Exploring Our World Through Geography – Semester 1 Update
Last semester, students and teachers across the school engaged with our newly updated Geography units, aligned with the Human Society and its Environment K–6 syllabus (2024). These units have been carefully designed by our teachers to inspire a strong sense of belonging, awe and wonder about our world, as well as deepen the connection to both local and global places. From exploring safe spaces and special places in Kindergarten to investigating water environments in Stage 1, students have been developing an appreciation for their surroundings. In Stage 2, our students used maps, climate data and digital tools to compare climates and communities in Australia and overseas. Stage 3 students delved deeper into how places are organised and managed, including learning about Aboriginal fire practices and seasonal calendars as powerful ways of caring for Country. Across all stages, students have been building map skills, thinking critically about how people interact with the environment, and cultivating environmental responsibility. We’re proud of how these units nurture curiosity, cultural understanding, and stewardship—key goals of the new syllabus.
A big focus of the new syllabus is learning how to use maps, images and other tools to gather geographical information. Students have been developing their skills in reading and creating maps, using photographs to describe environments, and interpreting data from digital platforms like Google Earth and the Bureau of Meteorology. Whether using a simple map to find playground features in Kindergarten or comparing climate zones with satellite images in the upper years, students are learning to observe, describe and explain the world around them using visual and spatial information. These experiences are helping students become confident, capable users of geographical tools—an essential part of understanding and caring for places in a changing world.
