Ryde Secondary College Engineering in Action workshop

Is your child in Year 5?

Have you noticed the School Bytes messages advertising Ryde Secondary Colleges After School Workshops?

James Gill in 5/6J attended the Ryde Secondary College Engineering in Action Workshop and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Below is his recount of the two sessions he attended.

Engineering workshop day 1

When I arrived at Ryde Secondary College, we walked to the sign-in desk, and we got a nametag that said our names. Then we went to a small outdoor theatre where we sat down on the benches and waited for everyone else to arrive. Then we walked around a wall single file and collected our fruit and biscuits then returned to our seats to eat our food. After that we went upstairs into a woodworking workshop. We were given wooden plane wings to colour in, design and shape. Then we were given a fuselage and we wrote our names on both pieces.

Engineering workshop day 2

We did the same routine as last week. But this time we went to a different wood workshop. There were plugs hanging from the ceiling for the hot glue guns that we used. We got the tail wings for our aeroplanes. We glued them together with hot glue which was cool. Then we finished colouring our aeroplanes and tested them out. Some of them broke but luckily mine didn’t. Some people didn’t have enough time to finish theirs, so they had either half built or half coloured models. My plane worked because I put the wings on backwards like a dogfighter. I really enjoyed it because I got to use a hot glue gun which you rarely use, I built a working wooden plane model and I got to test it.
