Principal’s message
NAPLAN Tests for students in Years 3 and 5 have commenced across NSW and run from Wednesday 12th March to Monday 24th March inclusive. We wish our students the best of luck as they navigate the assessments.
The Woolworths Cricket Blast Clinics commenced on Monday March 17 and continue for the next three Mondays from Weeks 8-11 (Monday, March 17, 24, 31 and April 7). Impressively, we have 66 students who signed up for this free program.
I remind you that Parent-Student - Teacher Interviews will occur in Week 10 of Term 1. Please read the information in this newsletter on how to book an interview. Teaching staff will be talking to you about your child's areas of strength and growth. They will also highlight areas of need if required. Please support your children by attending this vital meeting.
P&C Meeting
Our next meeting is tonight, Tuesday 18th March. This meeting will be face-to-face and online. We had great attendance via Teams last meeting with 25 people online. Let's aim to get as many if not more at tonight's meeting.
Canteen
A big thank you to the P&C for organising a canteen ordering service each Friday. Like any new initiative, there have been some teething problems. Hopefully they have now been ironed out.
The P&C have sent communications via School bytes and in this newsletter on helping to support the introduction of the canteen online system. Please support this and any other initiatives that will be announced as the year progresses.

Positive Classroom Environments
Alongside our Super efforts and awards systems, teachers at our school use positive reinforcement strategies, including stickers and ClassDojo points. These tools serve as tangible rewards for students' efforts and achievements, helping to motivate them to engage in positive behaviours and participate actively in class. By recognising and celebrating individual accomplishments, we promote a sense of community and collaboration, enhancing social skills and encouraging teamwork. Stickers and points also provide a visual representation of progress, boosting confidence and making learning more enjoyable. We believe that these strategies contribute to a positive and nurturing classroom environment.
Get Ready for Our Easter Hat Parade!
Harmony Day - Thursday 20th March
On Thursday 20th March, North Ryde Public School will celebrate Harmony Day. We will have a mufti day to celebrate this year’s theme, ‘Everyone Belongs’. Students can choose to dress up in their national costume, or wear orange.
The staff and students at North Ryde Public School will support ‘Save The Children’, a charity that protects children from harm and helps them access quality education and health services. All students are asked to please bring a gold coin donation on the day.
What is Harmony Day?
It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community.
Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.
Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
Why orange?
Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Day to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.
Our cultural diversity
Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world.
Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.
An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.
Facts and figures
There are some fascinating statistics about Australia's diversity that can be good conversation-starters:
- nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was
- we identify with over 300 ancestries
- since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia
- 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia
- apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi
- more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia.
These facts are taken from ABS 2016 Census Data. Check out the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.

Dear Parents and Carers
It’s been great to have our students back in classrooms and settling into the school year. I know all our teachers are looking forward to a successful 2025 and are excited to work with you to make this a memorable year for your child.
The evidence is clear that consistent attendance is the essential first step for your child to have a positive experience at school.
Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.
Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions.
Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn, make new friends and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.
If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it’s just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Medical appointments should take place outside school hours where possible and family holidays should be taken in term breaks.
If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s teacher or me directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day. There are also helpful resources for parents and carers on the Every Day Matters website.
Thank you again for working with our teachers and support staff to make sure your child is at school, on time, every day. We all want to see our students learn, grow and belong in our equitable and outstanding education system.
Yours sincerely
Rob Francis
Principal
Our aim is to have every child attending school at least 90% of the time if not above that target. To achieve the target, students would need to be absent for less than 20 days each year.
I would appreciate your support in trying to achieve this target.
Current Attendance rate = 96.3% |
Anti-Racism Strategy 2024-2035 - Part 2
We continue with further information about the NSW Department of Education's Anti-Racism Strategy 2024 - 2035, in particular, the key compponents of the strategy.
One of the key components of the strategy is the emphasis on community engagement. Schools are encouraged to collaborate with local communities, families, and cultural organisations to foster a deeper understanding of diversity and the importance of combating racism. This collaboration is vital for creating a supportive environment where all students feel valued and included.
Professional development for educators is another critical aspect of the implementation plan. Training will focus on equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills to recognise and address racism in their classrooms. This includes understanding unconscious biases, implementing inclusive teaching practices, and effectively responding to incidents of racism.
The strategy also emphasises the importance of student voice and leadership in the fight against racism. Schools will be encouraged to create platforms for students to express their experiences and perspectives, empowering them to take an active role in promoting inclusivity and respect within their school communities.
In our next newsletter we will go into more detail on the monitoring, evaluation of the program and parent and community education.
Congratulations to our Sound Crew for 2025. These students will have the responsibility for setting up sound systems and microphones for assemblies and other special events throughout the year.
Thank you for your responsibility and commitment to the role!
A massive thank you to Aaron Tsao da Silva for kindly donating some basketball nets to the school.
They will be put to good use on the basketball courts shortly.

Ethics Term 1 - What are we talking about?
Stage 1 – Years 1 & 2: When is it fair?
Our Stage 1 students are exploring fairness, starting with a story about some animals baking bread – where all but one help with the work. Should the animal who didn’t help still get to share in the bread? Later, they’ll discuss fairness in different contexts, including how to divide slices of cake. Through these discussions, they’ll consider different ways of thinking about fairness and what makes something feel fair or unfair.
We always need more volunteers
More families choose ethics than we have volunteers to teach the classes. We currently have four classes of children on a waitlist. If you can spare half and hour on Thursday mornings, or know of friends or grandparents who could, please share with them.
Your time is a valuable gift as a volunteer ethics teacher. Classes help children develop the life skills they need to voice their opinions, listen respectfully to others and make decisions based on evidence and reasoning rather than habit or peer pressure.
Find out more about volunteering by contacting pcethics@nrps.org.au or visit https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/

SWAP IT Healthy Lunchbox Program
Our school has registered for the SWAP IT Healthy Lunchbox Program.
SWAP IT is an evidence-based, healthy lunchbox program for primary schools. The program supports parents and carers to SWAP what is packed in their child’s lunchbox from sometimes foods to everyday foods. SWAP IT is:
- Free – no cost for schools to take part.
- Easy for Schools – our resources complement the existing curriculum.
- Easy for Parents – visual inspiration to make lunchboxes faster and healthier with no extra cost.
- Proven to work – SWAP IT enhances the nutritional quality of lunchbox foods. Parents love it, and teachers see significant benefits in the classroom.
The SWAP IT recommendations have been developed based on the latest evidence-based government nutrition guidelines.
SWAP IT involves sending out weekly messages for one term to your parent/carer community. The messages are created by SWAP IT and ready to share, providing ideas and tips for packing healthier lunchboxes. Messages are shared via this school's newsletter and may also be sent out via School Bytes.
Our next message is below:
Below is the Parent Calendar for Term 1 2025. The calendar has been updated.
Bus Zones and Use of the Crossing
Currently, we have parents parking their cars in bus zones after school to pick their children up.
As a result, buses are unable to drop off passengers and traffic is a mess. For everyone's safety, please park in appropriate areas.
Additionally, some parents are ignoring the "No Right Turn" signs when entering and leaving the Explore and Develop car park.
As well, last year a number of parents took to crossing Coxs Road with their children at the wrong places when coming to and from school.
I urge you to please use the crossing as it is only less than a hundred metres away. This is such a small price to pay and cheaper than hospital bills.
By crossing the road elsewhere, you are teaching your child bad habits and running the risk of injury or even death.
I would be horrified if an accident were to occur outside the school because parents did not use the crossing.
Your child's safety is paramount.
For their sake, please use the crossing.

New pedestrian safety decals around schools
Parents!
Children learn safe road user habits from you and will continue them when they are old enough to travel alone.
Remember this simple message and share it with them whenever you are crossing a road, driveway or car park:
STOP! one step back from the kerb.
LOOK! both ways!
LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic.
THINK! is it safe to cross?
